Dr Louise Kempton is Associate Dean of Research and Innovation in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences (HaSS) at Newcastle University. She is also a senior researcher in the University’s Centre for Urban and Regional Development Studies (CURDS). From an institutional perspective Louise works to promote academic involvement in innovation, knowledge exchange and policy making as part of a more holistic research culture in the HaSS faculty. She is principal investigator on the Research England funded £5.5m project Insights North East which will run from 1st August 2022 to 31st July 2025. The aim of the project is to explore how academic research can be harnessed to shape and inform place-based policy-making in the North East. Insights North East will seek to facilitate a two-way exchange between academics and policy makers to ensure future research agendas are demand led and responsive to the needs of the place. Her research is focused on the role of universities as anchor institutions in local strategies for innovation, economic and social development, particularly in post-industrial cities and peripheral regions.
