Professor Patrick Bonnett

Director of Development

“NICA is unique globally, there is nothing like it anywhere else in the world. It offers us the chance to drive economic growth in the region, support UK plc and- most importantly help deliver products and services, which are meaningful, visible and relevant to us all. What’s not to like?”

Patrick is NICA’s Development Director. He works with NICA colleagues and external stakeholders and partners to shape large-scale strategic opportunities, as well as managing NICA’s relations with UK Government.

Patrick has worked across the applied research and innovation arenas for over 35 years in both private and public sector organisations, ranging from small technology start-ups to internationally-recognised translational research laboratories. He has also spent time seconded to Government working on workforce development and science policy issues.

Patrick is Vice Chairman of the UK Science Park Association (UKSPA), a Board Member of the Association for Innovation, Research & Technology Organisations (Airto), and sits on the Advisory Board for Arise at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. He is also a Professor of Practice in Innovation Environments at Newcastle University and acts as an Advisor to Government on the Industrial Strategy (Ageing).

Patrick was responsible for leading NICA’s inputs into the design, specification, and build of The Catalyst, their award-winning £50M open innovation building. He is currently responsible for developing a large programme for NICA in China, funded by Innovate UK. Much of his recent work has focussed on the construction and operation of innovation environments both physical and virtual, their organisational structures and functions, and how they operate at regional, national and international scales.  Over recent years Patrick has developed a particular interest in deep collaboration co-location models where innovation and research assets sit alongside ‘users’ of such research expertise to drive open innovation, commercialisation, and economic growth both in the UK and elsewhere, including Europe and Australasia.
