The Collective Intelligence Database

Our task is to act as a Global Observatory and the National focal point and catalyst for research and innovation by companies, universities, research and development centres. It is a tangible collective of UK and Global Intelligence around ageing and longevity, which we are committed to identifying, collating, and sharing.

NIHR SWP

The National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Collaboration for Leadership in Applied Health Research and Care (CLAHRC) South West Peninsula (PenCLAHRC)

Undertakes high-quality applied health research focused on the needs of patients and supports the translation of research evidence into practice in the NHS. Current projects include the ‘Dementia – PACT (D-PACT)’ programme, a five-year project funded by a National Institute for Health Research (NIHR), that aims to develop and evaluate a system for dementia support based in general practice for people with dementia and their carers, and ‘Caring about Care - Improving the Experience of Care for People with Dementia in Hospital’ that is exploring how people with dementia, who fall ill or have had an accident and find hospital settings confusing and overwhelming, together with their families and hospital staff, can benefit from effective interventions.

Wolfson Centre

The Wolfson Centre for Applied Health Research

A partnership between the Universities of Bradford and Leeds, and Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, is a new facility to improve the health and wellbeing of patients in Bradford and the region. The facility, which opened in July 2019 at Bradford Royal Infirmary, will speed up the translation of research into real benefits by providing a hub where researchers, health professionals, policy makers and communities can share and collaborate, to address three main health challenges: health childhood, healthy ageing and the quality and safety of health care. By combining the expertise of health researchers with clinicians who have daily contact with patients, the Centre will ensure that its findings are put rapidly into practice –resulting in better health and social care for those who need it most.

CFAS

Cognitive Function and Ageing Studies (CFAS)

Population based studies of individuals aged 65 and over living in the community, including institutions. The initial aims of CFAS were to investigate dementia and cognitive decline in a representative sample of more than 18,000 people aged over 65 years, describe the service needs of dementia sufferers and the degree of disability suffered, discover which factors increase the risk of someone developing dementia, and to investigate the different diseases that cause dementia and how quickly dementia progresses.

Exeter

PROTECT

A collaborative project between the University of Exeter and King’s College London that aims to understand how the brain ages and how we might reduce the risk of dementia and mental health issues in later life. Harnessing the power of online technology and a dedicated website, PROTECT is collecting data on cognitive ability on a yearly basis from thousands of people over 50 to enable a time course of brain function as they age. DNA samples are also provided by participants via a simple at-home kit to allow the role of genes in this process to be assessed.
