Our task is to act as a Global Observatory and the National focal point and catalyst for research and innovation by companies, universities, research and development centres. It is a tangible collective of UK and Global Intelligence around ageing and longevity, which we are committed to identifying, collating, and sharing.

Heart of the South West LEP

The University of Exeter has a number of leading centres of excellence focused on issues related to ageing, including Centre for Research in Ageing and Cognitive Health (REACH), Centre of Excellence in Dementia Care Research and Living Systems Institute. The region undertakes leading research into issues that affect us as we age. The Universities of Plymouth and Exeter are part of Alzheimer’s Research UK South West Network Centre. University of Plymouth has a number of research groups which focus on finding solutions to some of the key issues that affect the elderly community. These include the VOYAGE Research Group and the Big Data group which is undertaking some new research around dementia detection via routinely collected data and machine learning, which is an application of AI where systems automatically learn from experience.

Dorset LEP

Dorset is at the forefront of innovative new technologies in health, welfare and ageing. 28.3% of the Dorset population is aged 65 and over where the UK average is 18%. Dorset, with its innovative Integrated Care System, is placed within the environs of a ‘living laboratory’ with a unique ageing demographic similar to where the rest of the world will be in 2050. The Care Sector is one of the leading sectors of Dorset’s economy and they are home to a number of care companies including Agincare, St Jude’s Care and Care South.

Coast to Capital

There are three major clusters in the area for healthy ageing activity: Brighton & Hove, Crawley and Chichester. This is partly due to the Universities’ input into this sector, partly due to there being more science-technology focus and innovation, and also due to the fact that they have a large over 65 population as many people come to the coast to retire.

Enterprise M3 LEP

The EM3 region is at the leading edge of health research and innovation with two leading universities (University of Surrey and Royal Holloway, University of London), top clinical centres such as Frimley Park Hospital and the Royal Surrey County Hospital, the 5G Innovation Centre (the UK’s largest 5G research centre) and the Surrey Sleep Research Centre. This vibrant research and clinical community engages with local industry, which includes global industrial leaders and UK-based global players. The region also has a large number of start-ups and scale-ups, many of whom are based in science/research parks and enterprise zones such as the Southampton Science Park, the Surrey Research Park and the EZ3 Enterprise Zone.

Oxfordshire LEP

The region is home to a world leading university which boasts a multidisciplinary research community that actively works across many fields relating to healthy ageing. Oxford is home to NHS hospitals with over 1 million patient visits a year. These are co–located with university research units making Oxford one of the world’s leading centres for clinical research. The region supports industry and academic collaborations as demonstrated by the recently announced partnership between US-based Insilico Medicine and the Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) in Health Data Science at the University of Oxford.

Greater Birmingham & Solihull LEP

The region’s universities have centres of excellence that support research concerning healthy ageing: Aston Research Centre for Healthy Ageing (ARCHA), University of Birmingham Institute of Inflammation and Ageing, Medawar Centre for Healthy Ageing Research and University of Warwick Institute of Digital Healthcare. The University of Birmingham also has the 1000 Elders Research Group.

The University of Wolverhampton is a member of the Dementia Action Alliance and undertakes Applied Research and Education in Dementia. The International Academy at the university is formally recognised as the first British university approved as a teaching centre to gain approval as an OET centre. This international English language test assesses the language communication skills of healthcare professionals who seek to register and practice in an English-speaking environment.

Greater Lincolnshire LEP

Greater Lincolnshire is part of the largest Enterprise Zone in the UK, and is home to two universities, two university technical colleges and seven colleges of further education. The University of Lincoln will welcome their first medical students in 2019 to their new Medical School.
