Research at the CMD focuses on understanding the processes underlying diseases related to age and lifestyle; discovering new ways of prolonging the health of ageing populations; shifting the emphasis from treatment to prevention; reducing risks and costs associated by early diagnosis and timely intervention.

Innovative Therapeutics for Ageing consortium (iTAc)

Started in 2018, is a national public-private partnership to accelerate the discovery and development of therapeutics for ageing. The consortium will provide industry with a pipeline of novel clinically de-risked drug targets and assets, in a large and rapidly growing area of therapeutic need (age related morbidities). Expertise across 5 major complementary UK centres forms the core of this initiative: The Francis Crick Institute, OxU (and partners Oxford AHSC, Oxford AHSN & Oxford BRC), University of Dundee, University of Birmingham and Birmingham Health Partners, and the Medicines Discovery .

Northstar Ventures – Ageing Innovation Accelerator Programme

The programme involves idea generation workshops, in-depth support with selected ideas and funding for commercialisation. Ventures can secure up to £12,500 investment from Northstar Ventures for each business involved with the potential for further follow on funding for the best performing companies. Run by the UK's National Innovation Centre for Ageing, in collaboration with the Innovation SuperNetwork, Northstar Ventures and Newcastle City Council (working with Aging2.0)

International Longevity Centre with Just Group PLC

Recently ran the ‘Innovating for Ageing’ programme which aimed to identify solutions to address the challenges faced by ageing consumers at risk of vulnerability due to physical disability, serious illness, dementia or financial exclusion. Up to £10,000 and specialist business support was available to the selected winners to help develop their proposition.

Recently established an innovation function which will aim to support core service innovation as well as explore how to support wider, ageing-focused innovation. Independent Age have been supporting the testing, development and now scaling of the Reconnections service – a Social Impact Bond funded partnership of local organisations, specialist providers and wider stakeholders working together to reduce loneliness in Worcestershire.
